What I read today:
Hebrews 12; John 17; Jeremiah 17; Psalm 51; 2 Samuel 3; Exodus 36
Hebrews 12 vs. 14 – “Pursue peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.” NRSV
Peace and Holiness. It can be hard to put these two things together, can’t it? Especially today, when the world seems to have everything but, Peace and Holiness.
We have no peace within our politics, our social organizations, our church, or in virtually any other institution within our society.
Holiness is fleeting. It seems that pursuing Godliness is no longer apart of who we are. “Respectable” business people overcharge for drugs, food, and other essentials. We hear news reports of Pastors involved in sexual harassment, financial impropriety, and much worse.
I would imagine in the time this letter was written things were just as bad. If we view Peace and Holiness as things for society to do, then quite honestly we will be disappointed.
The message in this passage is about us, not society.
We must pursue peace. We must show the love of Christ to those around us. We must live peaceably loving our neighbors as ourselves. We must show the true worship of God by living out a life of love to those around us.
We must pursue holiness. Living our lives to please our Father in Heaven. Seeking each day to be better than yesterday. Searching the scriptures and living a life of prayer. Becoming more Christ-like as we walk each day on this earth.
Pursuing Peace and Holiness is not about what is happening in society around us. It’s about how we impact the community.
