What I read today;
Romans 16; Matthew 16; Isaiah 16; Job 16; Joshua 16; Genesis 16
What do you think it means, when Jesus says, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”?
Does it mean that we all have to move to a monastery and sell all we own? Maybe it means we all have to volunteer a set amount of hours each week? How about, every one of us must tithe a fixed percentage of our income? Could it be that we all have to pray so much each day?
No matter how you look at it, Jesus statement is a difficult one to live up to. What Jesus is saying here is that each one of us must understand that following Jesus will come at a cost. It might cost us relationships with people who don’t follow Christ. It could even cause divisions within our own families. We might have to give up a job. We may need to stop seeing people who lead us to places we shouldn’t go. We may be in a position where we have to speak out against an injustice that takes place. It’s even possible we’ll end up at odds with our own government over some popular policy.
Jesus point is that anything that gets in between us and a relationship with God is subject to removal. That means we will have to choose where to follow. Do we choose Jesus each and every time or do we sometimes pick the path of least resistance?
The truth is a cross is very heavy sometimes.
