What I read today;
Exodus 30; 2 Kings 21-22; Psalm 74; Jeremiah 8; Acts 12; 1 Peter 5 &2 Peter 1
The nation of Israel was supposed to be a beacon of hope for mankind. God created it to show the world a better way. God wanted the people to be special and set apart from the rest of the world. But the people couldn’t pull it off. Their leaders refused to lead and instead, to appease the mob, they joined in the practices of the nations around them.
Idolatry was rampant. Including the worship of Baal and Asherah. They sold their sons and daughters into the service of Baal as shrine prostitutes. They offered their newborn babies as human sacrifices to Molech and Baal. They turned away from the one true God.
Manasseh is the culmination of all the evil kings that had come before him. He embodied the corrupt practices of those before him and not only allowed but actively participated in all of the practices. He didn’t just tolerate the sin, he declared the sin to no longer be sinful. The nation would devolve into violence and bloodshed.
After the death of Manasseh, his son Amon would continue the evil practices and after the 57-year rule of these two kings, the nation would completely forget the word of God that had made them who they were.
When 8-year-old Josiah becomes King, it’s shocking that the people had forgotten God’s word. In one generation God’s word had become lost. When the 26-year-old king hears the words of the dusty law of Moses found in a trunk inside the temple, he knows what’s coming. While God honors his repentance and grants a short term reprieve. The soul of a nation has been forever changed.
When the word of God ceases to be preached a nation will suffer. When Pastors and teachers fail to denounce the evil in a society, a country will suffer. When we elect leaders, who don’t know what the word of God says a nation will suffer.
In the United States, today are we at that point?
We are violent beyond any point in the history of our nation?
We have politicians openly calling for abortion up to the minute of conception and refusing to sign on to a bill that protects those who survive an abortion and are born alive.
We have placed the idols of greed, possessions, and pleasure above the worship of God.
Our corporations are mistreating our citizens by raising prices to obscene levels on life-saving drugs simply for profit’s sake.
It makes you wonder what God is thinking at this time, doesn’t it?
